Music Room Renovation in Cyncoed, Cardiff — Joinery Case Study

This music room renovation in Cyncoed, Cardiff initially began with a full strip-out to create a blank canvas. The client wanted to upgrade both the look and functionality of their space, with bespoke built-in storage and a brand-new floor finish.
We started by clearing the room — removing the old wardrobe, skirting, carpet, underlay, grippers, and existing floorboards. With an 8-yard skip on the drive, waste was kept under control, and the worksite remained clean and manageable throughout.
Once the space was cleared, we focused on building a solid foundation. New 18mm floorboards were supplied and installed, glued to each joist and along every board joint, then securely screwed in place to ensure long-term durability.
The client had already chosen their new floor, which we installed in roughly three hours — giving the room a warmer, more contemporary feel. We also fitted new skirting, supplied by the client, to tie the whole space together.
A major feature of the project was the custom built-in storage. Working off-site, we constructed low-level cupboards, wine shelving, and open shelves — all made from MDF for a clean, modern finish. Once brought on-site, everything was precisely installed, then filled and sanded, ready for the client’s chosen paintwork.
Paintable edging tape was used throughout to achieve crisp lines and a smoother, paint-ready surface. In hindsight, a pre-primed product or a material like moisture-resistant (MR) MDF could have streamlined the finishing stage. However, this would have added to both cost and lead time — factors we decided to keep within a tighter scope.
Overall, this was a fairly straightforward renovation project, with clear communication maintained throughout between client and contractor. The result: a once-tired room transformed into a practical, stylish space, ready to enjoy.
